ಭಾರತದಿಂದಲೂ ಒಂದು ಪತ್ರ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಮದ್ರಾಸ್ ಪೋರ್ಟ್ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಮಾಸ್ತರಾಗಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಆ ಹತ್ತು ಪುಟಗಳ ಪತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ 120 ಥೇರಮ್‌ಗಳಿದ್ದವು ಹಾಗೂ ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದು ತಾನೇ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ನಿರಾಸಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ಅವುಗಳತ್ತ ಕಣ್ಣುಹಾಯಿಸಿದ ಹಾರ್ಡಿ ಪತ್ರವನ್ನು ಪಕ್ಕಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾಕಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಆ ಪತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಿತದ ಸೂತ್ರಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಹಾರ್ಡಿಯವರು ಮತ್ತೆ ಅದರತ್ತ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಹಾಯಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದವು. ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಸಹ ಗಣಿತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞ ಜೆ.ಇ. ಲಿಟ್ಲಿ‌ವುಡ್ ಅವರನ್ನೂ ಬರಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಹಾರ್ಡಿ, ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಪತ್ರವನ್ನು ಕೂಲಂಕಷವಾಗಿ ಪರಾಮರ್ಶೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು. 1913ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಈ ಘಟನೆ ಗಣಿತ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಹೊಸ ಮೈಲುಗಲ್ಲು. ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದ ಕೆಲವು ಥೇರಮ್‌ಗಳು ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಜಾಂಶ ವಿಲ್ಲದೇ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯೇ ಹೊಳೆಯುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಹಾರ್ಡಿಯವರಿಗೆ ಮನವರಿಕೆ ಯಾಯಿತು.
ಹೀಗೆ ಮದ್ರಾಸ್‌ನ ಯಾವುದೋ ಮೂಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗೆ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ದೊರೆಯು ವಂತಾಯಿತು. 1887, ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 22ರಂದು ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಅವರದ್ದು ತೀರಾ ಬಡ ಕುಟುಂಬ. ಕುಂಬಕೋಣಂನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕೌಂಟೆಂಟ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಅವರ ತಂದೆಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಂಬಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಟುಂಬ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಯೇ ಕಷ್ಟವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಓದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದಿದ್ದ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್, 1903ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ್‌ನ ಅಂತಿಮ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲಿಗರಾಗಿ ಪಾಸಾದ ಕಾರಣ ಕಾಲೇಜಿಗೆ ಸೇರಲು ಸ್ಕಾಲರ್‌ಶಿಪ್ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics  ಎಂಬ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಚಿಂತೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿತು.
ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಗಣಿತದ ಲೆಕ್ಕಗಳ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶವನ್ನೇನೋ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೂಫ್‌ಗಳೇ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಂದರೆ ತರ್ಕ ಸಮೇತ ವಿವರಿಸುವ ಬದಲು ಬರೀ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶಗಳನ್ನಷ್ಟೇ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಸ್ವತಃ ಲಾಜಿಕ್ ಹುಡುಕಲು ಹೊರಟ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಗಣಿತದೊಳಗೇ ಮುಳುಗಿಹೋದರು. ಹಾಗೆ ಗಣಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅಂಕ ಪಡೆದರೂ ಇತರ ಸಬ್ಜೆಕ್ಟ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸಿದ ಕಾರಣ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಲ್ಟಿ ಹೊಡೆದರು. ಮರಳಿ ಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ಪಾಸಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಜತೆಗೆ ಸ್ಕಾಲರ್‌ಶಿಪ್ ನಿಂತುಹೋದ ಕಾರಣ ಓದನ್ನೇ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಬಂತು. ಈ ನಡುವೆ ಇನ್ನಿಬ್ಬರು ತಮ್ಮಂದಿರು ಜನಿಸಿದ ಕಾರಣ ಮನೆಯ ಹಣಕಾಸು ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಫೇಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮಗನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಿಟ್ಟಿಗೆದ್ದ ಅಮ್ಮ-ಅಪ್ಪ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಮನೆಪಾಠವನ್ನಾದರೂ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟು ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಸಂಪಾದನೆ ಮಾಡು ಎಂದರು. ಆದರೆ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಅವರ ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟವಾದ ಮನೆಪಾಠ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ತಲೆಯೊಳಕ್ಕೇ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೇಲಿಯಾದ ಬ್ರೆಟ್ ಲೀಯ ಬೌನ್ಸರ್‌ನಂತೆ ತಲೆ ಮೇಲೇ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು! ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಪಾಠಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವುದನ್ನೇ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು. ಆದರೇನಂತೆ, ಮನೆಪಾಠ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಬಿಡುವಿನ ವೇಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಿತದ ಲೆಕ್ಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್, ಹೊಸ ಹೊಸ ಥಿಯರಮ್ ಬರೆಯಲು ಮನೆದೇವಿಯಾದ ‘ನಾಮಗಿರಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ’ಯೇ ತನಗೆ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆ ಎಂದು ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರ ಜತೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇತ್ತ ಉದ್ಯೋಗವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಹತಾಶರಾಗಿದ್ದ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಅವರ ಗಣಿತದ ದಾಹವನ್ನು ಅರಿತು ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು, ಹಿತೈಷಿಗಳೇ ಅಷ್ಟಿಷ್ಟು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅಂಥ ಸಹಾಯ ಹಾಗೂ 1912ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮದ್ರಾಸ್ ಪೋರ್ಟ್ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆತ ಗುಮಾಸ್ತನ ಹುದ್ದೆಯ ಬಲದಿಂದ ಹಲವಾರು ಥಿಯರಮ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಯಿತು. ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಪರಿಣತರಿಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿ ಕೊಡು ಎಂದು ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರೇ ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಮೂರು ಬಾರಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದರೂ ಯಾವ ಉತ್ತರವೂ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ 1913, ಜನವರಿ 16ರಂದು ಜಿ.ಎಚ್. ಹಾರ್ಡಿಯವರಿಗೆ ಪತ್ರ ಬರೆದರು. ಅದು ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ಗಣಿತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನೇ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟತು! ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡಿಗೆ ಬರುವಂತೆ ಹಾರ್ಡಿಯವರಿಂದ ಕರೆ ಬಂತು. ಆದರೆ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಸ್ಥ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದ ರಾಮಾನುಜನ್ ಸಾಗರೋಲ್ಲಂಘನ ಮಾಡಲು ಆತನ ಅಮ್ಮ ಕೋಮಲತಮ್ಮಾಳ್ ತೀವ್ರ ವಿರೋಧ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದಳು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ತಾತ್ಕಾಲಿಕ ತಡೆ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಯಿತು.
